This is not to imply that the small empires were the invention of the British—but the British certainly left no stone unturned to keep the various kingdoms divided amongst themselves.

The British were not solely responsible for the ills of India—in fact, Indians themselves were mostly to blame, as the Indian society had degenerated over the past 5000 years due to many various influences (many of which came from within the society itself).
